Covid-19 Care Package
As the pandemic rises exponentially in Mexico alongside other countries, we sent resources to the Vidas y Sueños Enlazados por Ayudar base in Oaxaca to provide aid to the communities
As of February 2020, the first cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in México. In the United States, the pandemic began to exponentially increase in cases in March. However for México and other third-world countries, cases began to increase exponentially starting from April. The pandemic has impacted the whole world, but for developing counties like México, it has hit harder. Not only has it impacted the country economically, but due to México's high poverty rate, low rate of health insurance, jobs, and culture, it has had a greater impact.
In denser populated areas like the City of Oaxaca, social distancing has been difficult. Everyone is crowded together especially if you go downtown to the zócalo or go to the different open markets. When order was ruled to restrict people from going out and mandate wearing masks, many became unemployed or could not sell much, causing some people to become financially unstable. The children on the streets however, are in grater danger because they did not have a source of income (as of the restriction to stay at home), and no resources to protect themselves.
When cases started to increase in April, we sent out 400 soaps which contained no harsh chemicals, was cruelty free, and had biodegradable packaging out to Oaxaca to Vidas y Suenos Enlazados por Ayudar. Vidas y Sueños Enlazados por Ayudar is a charity organization based in Oaxaca which aims help better the conditions and development of marginalized communities. They work with 6 communities around the state.
As cases started to increase, restrictions were enforced not permitting organizations to go to the communities. Not until July were they given the green light allowing them to distribute the soaps and fliers along with other care packages to the communities.
On July 18, they were able to distribute to the community in La Colonia Anáhuac. They were able to distribute 200 of the soaps along with fliers.
In order to distribute in the safest way, the mothers were the only ones who were able to come and receive the care packages and supplies.
Here is a video of a member from Vidas y Sueños enlazamos por ayudar showing a mother how to properly wash her hands following the Illustrated Hand Washing Flier we created.
*disclamer* There was miscomunication on the first name. The first name was to be adressed as "Marina Kamezawa" who is the founder of Bridge for Salud
Unfortunately, after our first distribution, Vidas y Sueños Enlazados por Ayudar along with other organizations were given a red light, and we are back on hold until furthur notice. Even though we are on hold, Vidas y Sueños Enlazados por Ayudar is doing a campaign called "Mexicanos por Mexicanos" were they've teamed up with the Tech. de Monterrey to raise funds to buy basic supplies for care packages. These packages include paper towels, detergents, etc. We are working on creating a go-fund-me page to help them get as many supplies as possible to distribute to as many families as possible.
